eating to live

Posted August 7, 2011, by downriver2

My father used to tell me that there were 2 kinds of people in this world, People who eat to live and those who live to eat. Didn't make a whole lot of sense to me at 5 but it does now. I'd add one more today, those who eat because it's there, mindlessly shoving whatever is the current trend, available, or easy to get. They are never really hungry, it's just something to do.

I've become a eat to live and I've found that this is the hardest road to be on. I'm not a food freak or faddist, I like real food, grew up on things that were grown in the backyard or had to prepared from scratch. I remember what real milk that had the cream on the top looked and tasted like. I hate the artificial food world we live in and yes, I'm allergic to most chemicals in the food.

I didn't gain weight until I moved in with my grown kids and they had a lot of packaged, microwaved, quick fixed foods. Within a year my blood pressure went up and I nearly had a heart attack from blocked arteries in my heart. I've been trying to recover ever since. Hard to do since I can't do the shopping anymore, so I have a mixture of real and not real foods.

Olive oil is my savior, has gotten rid of all the gallstones I once had, clean my arteries to the point that there's little left to mention or find. I have normal EKG'S now. My BP is pretty normal, or what used to be normal, I've lost some weight but not enough. I found that the water gain eventually becomes real fat if you don't get rid of it quickly.

Still I had another scare, the Sudden Death syndrome, you drop dead for no apparent reason. But there is a reason, the meds the put you on deplete your minerals and your vitamins reserves, quietly and little warning. Fatigue being the main sign, not enough energy to walk across a room. Tired no matter how much you rest or sleep. Sleeplessness and forgetfulness are the others. Took a while to catch that one, had no idea it was happening. That one I caught in time by accident, had to load up on things to bring my levels back to nearly normal, the vitamin D3 and the magnesiums levels were crucial! Oh yeah, absolutely must have real vitamins, not the synthetics ones, especially the B's, avoid those at all costs! Use only the methylcobalamin B12!

My kids are hard to convince that it does matter what you eat, that real is best, that reading labels is a must and that avoiding the  fake is essential. I like your breakfast mix, it's very similar to the stuff my ex told me was normal in his country, Pakistan, very potent a handful was all you needed to get you thru the day.

I have to ask why you started your plan, how long have you been doing this? Are you the only one in your family or is everyone eating the same way? What kind of meat if any? Is it hard to find what you need? Do you do any fermented foods or drinks? Avoid dairy products or can you get raw milk? Have you lost much weight, did you need to lose weight? Are you content with how you feel? Notice any extra energy or other effects? Have you tried the coconut milk or cream or other fruits? What about green vegetables, do you eat other stuff for your other meals in the day?

I didn't know what to do with the coconut oil at first so I mixed it with peanut butter, which was terrific! I was raised by country people from the south and we ate a lot of beans, greens and bacon. Tons of fresh picked things and stuff my kids have never heard of or don't remember eating. Nearly all my elders were healthy and did fine into their 80's. Most  didn't need medication, as long as they cooked for themselves. IF that changed things seemed to go downhill for them. It ain't scientific but it does come from decades of observations.

Wonderful post downriver2. Sorry for the delay in my response. Here's your questions with my interspersed answers: ..... I have to ask why you started your plan, how long have you been doing this? [peter: My mother's death in 1999 of ALS got my full attention on health. I was 36. Been that way ever since.] ..... Are you the only one in your family or is everyone eating the same way? [My wife and kid are definitely more on the side of the way I eat than not. But there are exceptions. My oldest sister (user drlove) seems to eat like I do.] ..... What kind of meat if any? [Fish and fowl, OK. Eggs OK. Minimize red meats.] ..... Is it hard to find what you need? [Nope. I live in the Bay Area of California. It's a cultural crossroads.] ..... Do you do any fermented foods or drinks? [My wife has started making these ... sauerkraut, kambuchi, etc. Great tasting and great for me.] ..... Avoid dairy products or can you get raw milk? [I avoid all cow milk products -- except for yoghurt. I'm OK with goat milk products.] ..... Have you lost much weight, did you need to lose weight? [I was never fat per se. But at 36, I weighed around 205, at 6'3". Now I weigh 175 -- which is my high school weight. Body fat is around 12-13%. I lost abou 5% body fat upon including ogbono in my diet. I seem stable where I am now re weight/fat.] ..... Are you content with how you feel? [Yup. I'n most every way. In fact, I got on the site to post something about a bowel detox program I just concluded. It seems to have cleaned up the last remaining thing I have on my list to change about myself: my belligerence.] ..... Notice any extra energy or other effects? [I'm very energetic. Both mentally and physically.] ..... Have you tried the coconut milk or cream or other fruits? [Love all coconut products. The water is delicious -- but usually expensive. I buy the coconut oil by the gallon.] ..... What about green vegetables, do you eat other stuff for your other meals in the day? [Probably 80% of the bulk/mass of my diet is raw fruits, nuts, seeds, oats, and vegetables. 20% is cooked veggies and meat. Lunch everyday is a massive salad. Basically, I avoid all wheat, cow dairy, and sugar.] ..... [One thing you didn't ask about was sleep. I'm going to do a posting on sleep soon too. It's huge on these issues you raise.]
