Ogbono, Baby!: The Data

Posted March 27, 2009, by peter

This is the first in a series of postings concerning a personal 10-week trial I conducted between January 16 of this year, and today, March 27. During this trial, twice per day, I ingested a capsule of "Integra-Lean Irvingia" purchased from the Life Extension Foundation. Each capsule contains 150mg of Irvingia gabonesis.

This is the fancy Latin name for a tree that grows wild in Equatorial Africa. Informally,  the tree is called a "bush mango". The seed of this tree is known by the locals as "ogbono, "dika", and other nifty names. Evidently, the LEF gets hold of these seeds, has them ground up finely, and placed into these 150mg capsules.

In this series of blog posts, I will cover a number of aspects of this trial. But first, we begin with the data.

First thing every Friday morning during this ten-week trial, I measured:

  1. Weight (in pounds)
  2. Body Fat % (from a Tanita body fat scale at the 'Adult' setting)
  3. Waist (in inches, measured at the belly button)
  4. Blood Glucose (in mg/DL)
  5. Blood Pressure

During this trial, the latter two metrics didn't materially change. That is, my readings on those metrics were within optimal range when I started the trial, and remained so during the trial. So nothing of interest to report there.

But on the first three metrics listed above ... Oh boy!

Drumroll please ... Behold the data!

drLove: I agree. The science behind Ogbono says that it reverses "leptin resistance" caused by the binding of C-reactive protein to leptin. That is, the Ogbono works it magic by cleaving the bond between CRP and leptin, thereby allowing leptin to cross blood-brain barrier to give us the "full" signal, and allowing leptin to pass through cell walls giving the instruction to burn fat. If that's the dynamic, then the question is: If Ogbono has reversed my leptin resistance, can I now go off Ogbono, live a healthy life, and stay optimally skinny? Well, that is what I'm going to test soon as the seed has me down to 175.

The proof in the pudding will be if you can go off this supplement and still maintain those stats - when eating a pristine diet. Will this be a temporary quick fix or a real resetting of the leptin receptor sensitivity, etc. thereby producing long term benefits that can be maintained by eating really health and exercising vigorously and regularly?

The only reason I rated this post a 5 star is the potential that I think it may do for me!! I'm looking forward to trying this stuff. My diet is pristine and my exercising regime is great, and yet if I go off those even a bit, my weight starts to climb. I'm having difficulty shedding the last 5 pounds on me without "starving" myself.
