Sunshine Superman

Posted March 6, 2007, by peter

I'm a big believer in the healing power of sunshine. I do think it is one of those "Goldilocks" things that is great so long as it's not too much nor too little, but rather just right. And of course, the problem is that what is "just right" for you, may not be so for me. And more complicated, what is just right for me in March may not be so in June, and so on.

I have Mediterranean olive-ish skin that tans deeply. Subject to making sure I don't burn, I go shirtless outdoors from pretty much March through October (I live in the Bay Area of California). I'm looking to have by body generate as much Vitamin D from the sun as it can without burning.

I notice in her testimony, dr. love neglected to link to a great site on Vitamin D and sunlight. It's called SUNARC, and it is run by a brilliant researcher from the Bay Area named William Grant.  Check out the site. Pretty amazing cancer mortality vs. solar irradiation maps there, as well as tons of other great info.

One story to finish. Ever since I was a boy, just sitting in the sunshine would give me a feeling of peace. Some of my earliest memories include being a pre-schooler sitting in the sunshine on our back porch. My older sisters are in school, and my mom is in the kitchen making me lunch. The warmth of the sun feels to me like my mother's love.

Another other early memory of mine involving sitting in the sun concerns the fact that sunshine always has, to this day, tended to make me feel like pooing. I mean, if some of it is waiting in the queue, relaxing out in the sun will tend to move the queue forward for me.

Reading this testimony was like watching a Disney movie that came to an abrupt screeching halt. @$#$@##@!!!!!!! Sunshine and pooing? I've heard sunshine linked to many things, but not defecation. After my initial reaction of "give it a break, this guy definately has a bowel fixation", I theorized the physiology behind this experience. Sunshine for many people, creates a profound sense of relaxation, and when the smooth muscle of the bowels relax, defecation is efficient and optimal. Plus, sunshine sounds more appealing than laxatives and enemas.
