How-to: Eating Humble Pie

Posted March 21, 2007, by KG

This dessert is excellent for having better relationships with others or with yourself.

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups of "okay, I've goofed up here"
  • 8 cups of admitting that you're not so wise or loving after all
  • 12 cups of humiltiy
  • 16 cups of realizing that wisdom and love may also have something to do with eating this pie
  • 100% bitter chocolate (which makes eating this pie really hard without honey)
  • honey (which sweetens the bitterness)

Steps:

Mix all of the ingredients together but leave the 16 cups of realization for the end.  This is how you eat the pie and what you say to the appropriate person (either another person or yourself):

  1. "My behaviour hasn't been the most useful or helpful lately.  I'd like to change that."
  2. "I understand your wants and they are important."

Okay, bottom line is this:  " I screwed up and I behaved like a jacka$$.  I'd like to move forward.  How does that sit with you?"

Top off your honey chocolate humble pie with 16 cups of realization that wisdom and love continue to grow when you eat this pie.

I totally agree that it is an insufficient action, but it is a start. The understanding that follows as to why we "goofed up" is the stuff that personal growth is made of. And the beauty of personal growth is that there is no one way for all people. Everyone uses different techniques, processes, ideologies, etc. for growth to take place. Therein lies the beauty of this website.

Yep. I see this as a necessary (but insufficient) condition for moving forward in a relationship. Another component is understanding why we "goofed up" in order to help avoiding repeating that behavior in the future.
